Ayer, Mass. 2 West Bounds
10/28/2018 - Ayer, Mass. a little west of the station. The track is now owned by the MBTA but it used to be the Boston & Maine RR Fitchburg Division Main Line. The freight operator is Pan Am Southern. On the left with a GATX leased locomotive is the MBTA wash train which power washes the rails to prevent fallen leaves from making the rails slippery. It will probably need to make at least one more trip, in spite of the late October date, most leaves are still on the trees. There is only minimal autumn color. On the right is Pan Am Southern train 23K with containers. It is running west on the eastward track, this territoy is signalled for operation in either direction on both main tracks. The lead engine on 23K is a PRLX lease unit which appears to be of BNSF heritage. The container cars on the side track are not part of a train but are waiting to go into the Hill Yard. The blue Eimskip containers are from an Icelandic shipping company that calls at Portland, Maine. They are a common sight on the east end of Pan Am Railways and are usually carrying Poland Springs bottled water from Bangor, Maine.
